Help Choosing a Major

So you’re having trouble deciding on a major…The good news is that you’re not alone.  Choosing a major seems to get harder and harder every year for students regardless of their academic standing.  The even greater news is that we are available to help you one-on-one understand this PROCESS and support you as you make the decision.

WHY should I get help?

Choosing a major is in fact a PROCESS and therefore takes time.  We’ll walk you through the steps needed to make a decision and answer all of the questions you have that contribute to your indecisiveness.  There are also Common Myths about how to go about choosing a major.  You may have heard many of these from friends and even relatives and we’ll help you to understand the truth about matter.

HOW do I get help?

Because individual sessions may last from 30 minutes to 1 hour, students are generally seen by appointment.  If you’re interested in scheduling an appt. for help choosing a major, please contact ceh021@shsu.edu or call 936-294-4628.  Before your appointment, please complete Academic Coach (see info below) and review the 2008-2010 SHSU Catalog.

WHEN should I get help?

The earlier you start exploring your options, the more likely you are to not only get on track for graduation in a timely manner, but you’ll also start enjoying your coursework, which can make a big difference in your academic performance.  Entering freshman should concentrate on the meeting the core requirements.  The good thing about the core curriculum is that is gives you an opportunity to explore various subjects before making a decision on what to major in.  If you are close to completing or have already completed the core curriculum, we need to see you ASAP!  We want to help you so that you don’t waste time and money on courses that you’re just “trying out.”  Contact us and we’ll be glad to get you in.

Academic Coach

There are a variety of assessments that can be used to note information about you like personality style and academic strengths and weaknesses.  Knowing this information about yourself can aid you in selecting a major.  We use Academic Coach.  You may access this assessment by logging onto SamWeb via the home page.  Once you’ve logged in, click on Student Records, then Academic Coach.  This assessment does take about an hour to complete, but you are able to finish a section and come back.  Once you’ve completed this, a report will be generated and sent to your SHSU e-mail. You’ll need to bring this report with you when you have your one-on-one meeting.
